Should We Use Clean Cutlery If Dropped On The Floor ?
« on: 17/11/2007 21:55:02 »
Cutlery....it's my all time favourite utensils used for cutting and eating food !!

here's some...

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Nice eh ?

Now, I was going to do this as a poll but I decided against it on two counts...1: Peeps may be embarrassed to answer honestly....(even if the answer is anonymous) and 2: MY polls are always poorly attended !! *le sulk*

So, I will just ask your advice instead !

Is it hygienically safe to immediately use a piece of cutlery that has just fallen on a clean floor ? or should one either get a new one out of the drawer or just wash the one that has fallen ?

whajafink ?

depends, if my floor or kitchen surfaces are clean...then i do.

but i guess you may be asking about bacteria. if that is the case then as soon as it is dropped on the floor it will become home to LOTS of bacteria, what's that "rule"...it's OK to eat food it it has not been on the floor for more than 10 seconds or something...

well thats not true, within an instant bacteria will be there doing their thing and multiplying. just eat some friendly yogurt afterwards [;)]

While it is true that bacteria will attach itself to the cutlery as soon as it touches the floor, one has to ask is this any more of a problem than all the bacteria that is likely to be on the child's hand every time he puts his hand in his mouth.

Small amounts of bacteria are not actually harmful, and will help build up resistance to disease (and possibly reduce the risk of asthma - some theories have speculated that excessive hygiene may be a contributory factor for asthma).  Ofcourse, the issue is to judge what constitutes 'small amounts of bacteria'.

The real risks are anyway probably not with bacteria, but with other parasites, often associated with pets.

I agree and when when we had tons of pets the 10 second rule was null and void! LOL! I always through it back in the sink or quickly washed it! LOL But I agree!! But I am kind of picky about the floor and our feet and what we have stepped in etc.. so Usually no I wash it! But truth it depends on how I feel and if I am mad at bob.. then if he is here he might find the utensil by his plate! LOL... Just kidding but I have thought about it!

I always get clean ones for me, but if hubby has ticked me off, he gets to keep the dirty one.

Now why can't George make sensible posts like all the others ? [;)]

This is of course a very moot point about the hand in mouth.....so perhaps...as ewe say....a little bit of something will help to build resistance.....*le sigh*....we dont have any pets anymore....besides the kids that is !!
