Actually, what I am going to suggest might be somewhat unorthodox, but I'm not sure that it would be impossible to do.

The asp links that people have are just names. I cannot see any technical reason why Apache (I cannot say for IIS) could not map a request for an ASP URL to a piece of code that it is instructed to use the PHP module to interpret.

As I said, highly unorthodox – but if you have control over the Apache control files, it might be possible.

It depends whether you are simply running under a virtual hosting plan, or you have full control over the configuration of the web host.

It should definitely be possible to maintain the links even with a different program - you could even tell apache to run .asp files through php, but it will take some work...

So what has happened so that the site is working OK now ?...(it's still a little temperamental though this afternoon)...it was quite a sudden transformation of performance, surely the pod casts just didn't all stop..just like that !...What is it that actually makes it so unstable ?

the podcast was definitely to blame - 20,000 copies (300 gigs of data) in 2 days - was suffcient to bring the server down to a crawl. I think iTunes was trying to grab the new content from thousands of computers everywhere, simultaneously.

I'm confident we can sort this out. Dave's on it (when he's finished writing his grant applciation!)

Hmm..as Robert has witnessed...things are in first gear again...not as slow as the other night/day (when ever) but a steady almost ' syrupy ' effect.

It is exceptionally slow, by any historic standards.

I would ask whether you were suffering a denial of service attack – if not, the effect is about the same.

I believe that the provider have narrowed the bandwidth tube...

We have slimmed down the operation manyfold to restore functionality, but we urgently need to get the hosting sorted out. I'm engaged in negotiations with several companies at the moment. I'll keep you posted.
