Does anyone know what this fungus is I live near coffs harbour NSW Australia.

You know, I didn't know what this was either, but by using a simple Google image search of "Australia fungus" I found this thing's identity pretty quickly.

This is an anenome fungus (Aseroe rubra):

In England they are called Earth stars and are quite rare.
