I know that was why and it was Dr John Snow, who'd noticed the reason for so many Londoners were dieing of Cholera as they were drinking from an adulterated water pump. Or so I once heard on the radio.

João Magueijo, in “Faster Than the Speed of Light” maintains that if you talk to Russian scientists about inventors, they will claim that a Russian invented the flush toilet before anyone else knew there was sh*t.
