I set a personal record recently where I slept for over 17 hours []. I can tell you now I felt like crap afterwards, I had been up for two days solid before, typing on a computer.... I would have much preferred 7 hours sleep in between days than a mammoth day/sleep.

I've never had a regular sleep pattern in my life, but then I've never had any interest in regular patterns.

As for a reasonable bedtime for children, I think that if your mother thinks it unreasonable, it probably is.  Mother is always right.
