" The year-to-year variability of agricultural productivity is a key determinant of food security. It is thought that climate change could alter the variability of growing season temperature, soil moisture, and their co-variability, yet the resulting influence on the variability of staple crop yields globally is unknown. Here, we pair empirical crop models with CMIP6 simulations to project how changes in temperature and soil moisture due to climate change (2015-2035 vs. 2080-2100 under SSP5-8.5) will influence the year-to-year variance of global and regional crop yields of three staple summer crops: maize, soybeans and sorghum. We find that the inter-annual variance of crop yields is projected to substantially increase under climate change, by 25 to 80 percent across crops.

We document that this increase in variability is driven by three factors. First, an increase in mean temperatures increases yield variability because crops are more sensitive to thermal-variability at hotter temperatures, consistent with prior findings. Second, temperature variability itself increases, leading to increased yield volatility. Finally, the co-variability of temperature and soil moisture strengthens, leading to increased covariability of thermal and water stresses and increased yield variability. Yield variability increases most where expected yields fall, temperatures warm, and soils dry, leading to substantial increases in the probability of negative climate-induced yield shocks in these regions. These findings indicate increased adaptive measures to both heat and correlated moisture stresses, will be necessary to maintain current levels of crop yield variability. "
