Cute demonstraion of electro tatics
« on: 08/05/2012 19:45:06 »
A long time ago I came up with a cute electrostatics experiment that is rather interesting to do. I don't think that it will work very well in the summer but it will work in the winter when the air is cold.

Go to the kitchen sink, or any sink where you can get a thin stream of water flowing. Take a comb out of your pocket and comb your hair with it. Then, under proper air conditions, when you place the side side of your comb near the water you will see the stream be pushed over from its normal steady downward flow.

This isn't something people usually see so you'k usually get suprised resonse. It'd make a cute science demonstration in an electrostatice class in highschool. I loved it the first time I created it and tried it out.  :D

It sounds interesting.

Would it also work with a balloon?

If you mean replace the comb with a charged balloon then yes. On a cold day and you've  walked across a carpet and become charged then your finger would work too but you'd have to have the water turned on already or have someone nearby turn the water on.
