Fluctuating Waves in tall Grassses and Trees ....why's that then ?
« on: 12/04/2007 15:04:44 »
Hi,

I'm Neil..nice to meet ewe.

So I'm driving down the A1081 (From South Mimms Roundabout to Barnet.. [;D]) and notice the field on my right is filled with this stuff !

Rapeseed !..one thing I did notice was that there were  ' waves  ' moving across portions of the field.

Why is this ?...surely in a steady breeze or wind the plants should just bend continuously one way !!..not act like a pendulum !!

It's the same with trees and plants in my garden...I can feel the that it's a steady breeze but the plants clearly move back and forth ..

me don't get it !...but I want to get it !!

Wow Neil, I can see why you're famous for starting threads  [:P]

I thought that this "Pendulum" movement was quite obvious. Obviously, like the fact, what goes up, must come down.. What goes to the right, must go back left?

The winds are applying forces on the leaves, stems etc. Then the winds temporarily stop, as the wind doesn't always blow at the same speed, constantly. At this time, the stems/leaves reuse the energy which the wind gave to go back upright, and not at an angle, or sometimes more than upright, and like a pendulum, to the other side again.

Then the wind strikes again, and the stem moves due to the wind. I think this process carries on repeating again, and again, and again.

I hope that helps, although I'm not sure if the explanation is correct. Anyone feel free to help meh out, like George, who is an expert at this [:)]

HUmmm that is interesting, I know what you mean i have seen that when the wind was blowing to, but I never thought about why it was blowing more then one direction!..good question.. I need to pay more attention to what it feels like when I notice that. I have also seen the same things happen to the clothes and sheets on my clothesline also as they hung in the wind. usually the wind was slightly more then just a slight breeze on those days with the laundry! It was pretty windy!

THANKS SEANY,

I have stood in the middle of one of these fields (yes me has)..and watched as the plants move back and forth but all the while the breeze upon my face has been constant !..

Though..your explanation seems very reasonable !!..wow..what a bright lad !!..*paths the seany on the head*..

It will be nice to get a definitive answer though...

hmmmmmmm.....I am beginning to wonder if it's due to inconsistencies in the plants themselves in conjunction with what you have said !!..ie: they are not uniform in shape and size...

Lol, I'm not sure about making sense for the plant one.. But for the washing line, it makes more sense in that perspective. Anyway, if the wind stops blowing in the clothes in the washing line thing, then gravity acts on it, so it must come straight down anyway, but doesn't give the "pendulum" movement. Just a straight down movement. But I think the energy is "rebounding" and using it to come bouncing back like a pendulum again.

Hmm.. What affect would the inconsistences have?

In that because they are not all the same size and shape that there will be cracks are gaps in the plants that serve to ' relax ' the pressure that the wind has acting upon them

Well, both of you being a "Too much free time level member".. You would just think of those good and annoying questions which are merely impossible to answer wouldnt you?

After all, all the famous people like Socrates, thought of these weird and unsolvable questions because they had nothing better to do! [:0]

Haha, hope you get some good answers Neil! [:D]

HEE HEE HEE.. MAkes me want to lie down in it and make tunnels and look for little crawly creatures..Hee hee.whittle bugs etc.. Brings back feelings of being about 7 years old and I packed my suitcase and ran away down the road cause my mom was gone and just my step dad was there..I had this tiny little white suitcase and I put my pajamas and a bunch of chocolate chips and some peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches in it and snuck out the back door, suitcase coat on and my baby doll in the other hand with her blankie! I ran down the road and around the corner and entered a field fuull of wild mustard pink white and yellow very tall and thick with that tall wavy wheat like grass mixed in.. I remember laying there for all day .upset.. Then around 10:00 in the evening I saw my moms car headlights.. I waited to make sure it was her, then I ran back down the road and snuck in the back door and hid my suitcase, but left it full for thew next time!!! I remember looking at all the little crawlies that day and loving the freedom I felt lying in that tall grass with all the wild mustard and crawlie bugs and caterpillars! LOL

LOL That would have been fun..LOL I loved crawling through the big tall grass and rolling in it was greater fun yet.. I would love to fall down in a big area of grass and roll around in it till I was lost forever! LOL
