Why do we not have a philosophy, psycology, and sociology section @ N.S
« on: 12/06/2007 16:50:32 »
Was thinking that there is no section with in naked scientist to disucuss, philosophy that could be divided into political as well as classical, or social science which again could be heavyily divided, and also psycology!

Have done a poll!

As a science forum surley they should be included?

If included I thought human sciences an apt title!

I like the idea actually I think it is a good one .. I will steer clear of the politics and it would certainly need to be done on a courteous level with all members as I know how politics can raise hackles in some people! So careful thought from all participants would be a must for participation and across the board courtesy to everyone expressing their views regardless as to what those views are! I like the Psychology part a lot!  [:)] [:)] [:)] [;)]

the psychology, sociology, and philosophy would be fine, IF everyone can get along. politics is probably not a good idea.

I don't think Psychology should be bundled in with the others; this has always felt more like a science to me. And I'm guessing that some sociologists might also plead..

But Philosophy, Religion etc... in one place might be a better idea than scattered around teh other boards.

A section that would be both interesting and practical would be linguistics.  I mean, although a vast majority of the users may have English as their native tongue, there must be a lot (like me) to whom English is a second or third language. And I think we have a lot of experience to share, that may also be valuable to English speaking people who are learning an other language.
I am thinking about items like "false friends" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_friends)

I'll second this - any practice I can get with German would be appreciated! I've often wondered how far you could get in a foreign language just with your own language - there should be a "dictionary" of words that are identical, which would give a huge base for learning new languages!

These are all nice ideas and I am sorry about the foreign language but the new forum rules will be illiminating the foreign language as it leaves to much open for people to run amok saying things we have no control over or idea about what is being said.. So we have decided that is a debatable subject as far as the amount of usage and how it is used .. I think there was some stipulations about it remaining in chat and with the discretion of mods as per its usage..

I think this is good and would actually be a nice idea.. If you all are serious I would say Politics needs to be not a forum thing as it really can become quite heated! I think there are a lot of great ideas here and I like the courtesies  you are all showing each other here. Thanks it is very nice.. The way it should be. So my thoughts are if you would like to see any of these things implemented that you need to bring them up with Chris or Dave and let them and the other mods help decide.. There would have to be thorough discussion, I really don't know what the likely hood would be of them adding new boards to the existing data base.. but the ideas are terrific! I like how they are being discussed . Weigh out the pro's and cons of such a board and consider all the posters and contributions and ways to keep the topic calm and pleasant.  [;)] [:)] [;D]

Semiotics! why not?

Did you mean semiotics, or semantics?

Semiotics, from what I can gather, has never really been a very cohesive discipline, having very diverse applications, and diverse approaches that go along with that.

I am not sure that it would be easy to fit in a dictionary into a forum.  And it would probably be better to go for a multilingual dictionary on a specific matter, like computer sciences.
Even then, it would not be easy :   I give you a link to a English-French dictionary meant for (French) students who have to write papers.  Although computer sciences take a major place, it also includes quite a number of terms from other fields.  But on computer sciences it lacks generally accepted translations like "couriel" for "e-mail"
