Shivers down my back during certain sounds !

Ooohhh...just thinking about it makes me cringe.
For the record, I am perfectly happy with the sounds of nails/chalk on a blackboard,I am fine with the screeching of a knife or fork on a plate, a dentist drill is just about tolerable.............
BUT
...I have an intense abhorrence and revulsion for the sound of a needle skipping across a record...or even worse (difficult to type..getting shivers brrrrrr !!!)...you know how some DVD covers have a pseudo 3d image with multiple layers and lines etc ?...so that when you look at them from different angles you get either a pseudo 3d image or even motion ?...the sound that that makes when a finger nail (oh gawwwwwd !!)...or something brushes across it makes me want to flee......I have an enormous displeasure when people are wearing those rain cover things made of plastic type material with the same properties, (thousands of lines etc)...and in all seriousness...I just can't bear it intently.
My question is....WHY does this happen ?.....Just typing this out has incurred so many shivers down my back it's untrue !!...just imagining that material and I feel all yucky and cringy.
I would be very interested to know the science behind this revulsion.
Thank you very much.......brrrrrrrrrr !!!

Just reading your post made me shiver, it's odd I can tolerate all the things you hate but can't stand the others you can bare.... Is it all a personal thing or is there just a few groups.?

I don't know the science behind it, but I know the feeling. I can't stand a fork on a plate or fingernails on a chalkboard. The zip of many ridges doesn't bother me though.
This was discussed in another thread a long time ago, and the theory that came out is that maybe the sound is causing interference with my tinnitus. Or maybe it's causing some interference in the cochlea that makes some of the nerve endings get overloaded. Or maybe it's just a wiring thing in the brain.

You must have some kind of pain receptor activated by the sounds.

The sight of Neil naked would probably be enough to scare the pants off anyone.
Seriously, there are a few theories to account for the 'fingernails and chalkboard effect'. The most plausible I heard was that we are primed to be sensitive to high frequency sounds because they are the noises that tend to be emitted by animals in distress. An animal in distress probably signals danger and so the galvanising effect of a high-pitched sound is intended to grab our attention and prepare us to take avoiding action.
I too experienced shivers just by reading Neil's post !
