Tony asks:

"How do snakes maintain muscle strength with virtually no movement even while kept in a container while captive?"

Now that is a good question and probably similar to the mechanism evolved by bears that sleep for months at a time over winter and suffer very little physical decrement...

In the wild, snakes are pretty idle most of the time, unless they are actually digesting a meal, or chasing a meal (or a mate).
They are not so different in captivity.

Snakes have an impressive ability to shrink organs and then reactivate them when needed.
