Now that is a good question and probably similar to the mechanism evolved by bears that sleep for months at a time over winter and suffer very little physical decrement...

In the wild, snakes are pretty idle most of the time, unless they are actually digesting a meal, or chasing a meal (or a mate).
They are not so different in captivity.
Snakes have an impressive ability to shrink organs and then reactivate them when needed.
