IUD coil
« on: 22/08/2005 17:42:53 »

hi I'm a 26 year old female I have had the IUD coil removed 6wks ago. I then had a period on the 7th August to the 12th August which was ok. Then on the 18th I started bleeding again just like a normal period. Just wanted to if this is normal and has anyone out there had this experience to? [:)]

Hi Sabina (what a fantastic name !)....welcome to the site.....I'm not the medical expert here and hopefully Chris will reply to you soon but as far as I'm aware I am sure I have heard this is common......please just take my answer as someone who has heard of this before and as not an  'academic' answer.....however, I am sure you are fine.

Have you tried ringing your GP ?...anyway...I hope an answer will ensue and I wish you well.

Thanks for writing. With your permission we'll move this post to the medical section shortly (so look there for it if you can't find it here).

What was the timing of your first 'period' relative to the removal of the iud ? Was it immediately afterwards ?

Also, was it an IUD, or an IUS (drug-eluting 'coil', like Mirena)?

Thanks, but was it a hormone-releasing 'IUS', or just a straight copper 'coil' ?

Copper coils should not cause any disturbance to your hormonal rhythm because they work by provoking a state of sterile inflammation in the uterine wall, rendering it unreceptive to implantation of a foetus.

The coil is 'anchored' in place by a pair of plastic arms jutting out sideways into the uterine lining, so removing a coil like this can pull on the endometrium (the lining of the uterus), triggering transient bleeding. It sounds as though this might have happened in you.

Of course, it goes without saying that one should always also ensure that cervical screening is kept up to date, that you should see your GP or a clinic if there is any possiblity of infection, and if the problem persists you must see your GP immediately. However, from what you've said, I'm sure that things will settle down again, assuming you had regular periods before ?
