Hello Honest People,

My name is Shirley !!..No it's not, I'm Neil...I lied and then I told the truth.

As i was sitting making contributions to the sewage treatment industry I was wondering about Truth Drugs...how do they work ?...how do they manipulate the mind to confess all ?....I gather the confesee is unaware that the truth is being told by him/her but is aware enough to answer the question. So, presumably the one under the infuence is not aware that he/she is breaking a code of silence eh ?, or are they but just can't fight the impulse to be honest.

Sorry to mention the circumstances that led to me asking this question, but i couldn't help myself...I had to tell all !!

Truth Serum - Sodium Pentothal, is really a short acting anesthetic agent.  It relaxes you, makes you lose inhibition and therefore become more communicative.  However, it does not make you lose control, so if you wanted to lie while under its effects, you could.  Psychiatrists used to use it to analyze patients years back, and when I worked with alcoholics and drug addicts in one of the recovery units, the shrinks used it -- but that was a long time ago.  I don't think it's used for anything other than a short acting anesthetic now.

Sodium pentothal is a barbiturate with tranquilising (sedative) properties. The actual chemical is the sodium salt of 5-ethyl-5-(1-methylbutyl)-2-thiobarbituric acid, and it was first synthesised, in 1935, by Abbott Laboratories.

The drug works by binding to the receptor in the brain for the inhibitory neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid). These GABA receptors are also targeted by another class of tranquilisers - the benzodiapepines (including diazepam (valium) and temazepam) which work in a similar way to barbiturates but are much safer in overdose, partly because their effects can be reversed by a competitive antagonist called flumazenil (annexate).

Unlike other members of the barbiturate family, sodium pentothal is very short acting - the effects last literally a few minutes - meaning that it was used to induce rapid anaesthesia which was then subsequently maintained with a gaseous (inhaled) agent.

But in small doses, insufficient to induce anaesthesia, it has a relaxing and disinhibiting effect. Historically, psychiatrists tried to exploit this effect in the belief that it made patients more open to suggestion and better able to recall repressed memories. Because of its disinhibiting effects it was dubbed a 'truth drug' but this is actually a misnomer. It does not cause you to involuntarily reveal everything you know, it merely makes you more willing to co-operate. To my knowledge, no genuine 'truth drugs' exist.

I've never been interrogated with Sodium Pentothal or any other "truth" drug, but I have some limited experience with them.  Basically I was aware of what I was saying and what was going on around me, but I really didn't care about anything.  I didn't care that my tooth was being brutally yanked from my jaw amid the sounds of cracking bones.  I didn't care that the doctor was cussing because he couldn't quite get it out.  I didn't care about much of anything.
