Chris has put huge effort into restructuring the site which should cure the problems we've been seeing.
Please let us know if you see any issues.
Big thanks to Chris

Can't post without quoting a post at mo...quick posts isn't functioning.
A thread of mine named 'an alternative perspective on space expansion...?' on New Theories has disappeared completely, and it's not possible to post a New Topic at mo...

I liked the layout and colours of the intermediary site better btw.  It was nice to see who and how many people were viewing a particular thread.

Thanks for the feedback; the layout is actually the same as the previous formatting, only the colours and text sizes have changed.

Regarding not being able to post, I'm going to need a bit more information on that; what exactly is the error? What situation? I'm not seeing that problem myself, and no one else has reported that.

Have you tried logging out and then logging back in to refresh the session?

Changes have been happening throughout the day and you might have a cached mixture of old code running.

I spotted that - it's because I've got those massive twitter and FB icons in there; I'll try to find some smaller ones...

PS - you can scroll down the list with the cursor keys, for example, to get to the bottom options.

Sometimes when I sign in, the server returns a hard "Forbidden error" (403) message...
Has that happened today?
It should have been fixed by latest upgrade, let us know if it happens again
Thanks

Yup. This issue is still bugging me randomly. I suspect this may be a Apache bug...

It needs tweaking; a spammer deluged us earlier this week so I had to shut it off...

Why is there a policy change about who can follow the links given in a discussion?
seems to me as a short sighted idea, increasing the number of participants short time, while limiting the reading pleasure for people just wanting to browse the site? Meaning that I don't expect new readers to subscribe by locking the links we give.

You raise a good point.

However, I thought it was worth auditing whether this would translate into more users; if it does, this benefits the community as a whole. If it doesn't, then we'll discontinue it.

I think there are two issues to the idea Chris, and to this site. One is the entertainment value for the casual reader, I'm guessing there are a lot of people that, by several reasons, just might browse us without becoming a member. That should work for advertising reasons, assuming a revenue of sorts for the TNS.

The other type of people are those that may feel that they have something to say, or just want to argue for fun, or correct something.  In this later case I don't expect locking a link will give them a stronger impetus to join, rather the opposite.

It seems to be putting up a lot of little blue boxes that tell me "so and so has replied to your post"- which is true- but the replies are ancient.
After a while they go away again; as if it's noticed...

Yes, apologies - it's slowly catching up with itself... if nothing else, it does mean that I'm revisiting some old posts I'd forgotten about!

My view is that the causal reader most often will get frustrated, and look for something more straightforward. when it comes to the others? I'm not sure, but looking at myself I probably would look for something else.

RD - I looked at your message and was able to insert the images you had attached without incident.

How did you attempt to do it? The system has been updated, so maybe the technique you used wasn't quite correct. If you tell me what you did I can either look for the bug (if it exists) or put you on the right path.

When posting a couple of wiki links with text written in between them, when I'm logged in I can see the 3 paragraphs of my text between the wiki links, but when I'm logged out I can't, which renders the post as unintelligible.
I've deleted the second wiki link to rectify this anomaly, but it is your 'you have to be registered to see links' that would seem to be also obscuring the view of the text written between in addition to the links.
