...Once you have chosen the filename you should then be able to click "(Insert Attachment 0)" underneath the "choose File" button and it should go in.
For me, on Windows, clicking on "(Insert Attachment 0)" causes the attachment tickbox to lose its drop-shadow, as if it was being pressed ...

but does nothing else: the attached image is not inserted.

For me, on Linux, clicking on "(Insert Attachment 0)" causes the attachment tickbox to toggle: checked / unchecked / checked / etc ....

[ If it's just me who has this problem it's not worth bothering about ].

* Clicking on '(Insert Attachment 0)' is activating the attachment tick-box, (but doing nowt else).png.gif (113.88 kB, 885x560 - viewed 13248 times.)

* inappropriate toggling of attachment checkbox (FireFox on Linux).gif (109.84 kB, 934x656 - viewed 13523 times.)

But if you look at my screenshot you'll see that there is no "uncheck the item you want to remove" message.

Have you tried inserting the item from scratch when you first post the message?

Try this:

1) Click "reply" (the blue button at the thread bottom).

2) Type "hello Chris" in the post box

3) Click "+ Attachments and other options" (below the post box)

4) Click on the browse filename box and select the filename for the image from your computer.

5) Click the "(Insert Attachment 0)" green wording directly below the Choose file box you just clicked.

Hit POST (bottom right).

I'll be very interested to see what that does...

Insert attachment doesn't work for me from scratch either.

Nothing new appears in the post box when I click on "(Insert Attachment 0)", see ...

Thanks for trying; I am completely at a loss to explain that behaviour; you saw that I used a newly-registered account to post in 3 different browsers yesterday, without incident...

Sorry!

I'm snowed under this week, but when I get a second later I'll have a more in-depth fiddle. I am wondering if there are some local settings on your machine or account that are blocking something...

One thought - you've not got some really ancient historical cache running have you? Like some ancient js cached away from the old version of the site?

If you run the browser incognito mode, with a clear history, does it still play up?

The three* browsers I've tried are all set to clear-the-cache when the browser is closed.

Apart from not being able to insert images, I've not encountered any other problems when composing a post.
Maybe you have privileges in the forum which mean you can't reproduce the problem:
e.g. some measure designed to stop spammers is inadvertently restricting the functionality for Jo[e] Public, but not for the webmaster.

That's a good thought, but that is the reason why I logged in as Amelia, with a newbie account, to check, and couldn't replicate the problem.

It's a really simple bit of javascript that just inserts attachment=0 into the post! I am surprised that it plays up so badly...

This is me, RD, using a new account RD-2, to see if the insert-images problem is specific to my RD account ...

Okay! It must be a settings-specific problem that is a legacy of the old system. There is a way to solve this, but it would involve resetting everyone's accounts to defaults. The "defaults" "should" be the same for everyone anyway... I will try it over the weekend.

Don't risk disrupting everyone's accounts if it's just me being affected.
I can just use the new RD-2 account, that's the easiest & least-risky option.

Well Chris, I might have been over reacting there, but I got awfully frustrated by not being able to post a new question due to the disappearance of the 'logo'. Don't know what changes you made there but I definable prefer a simple text button or similar, telling me 'create question', instead of some logotype telling me nothing. And I do find a problem with this site updating very slowly as I go back to the questions others made, sometimes extremely slow. And it is specific to TNS, don't have those problems with any other site.

Anyway, I started to wonder if the missing 'link' to 'post a question' now meant that we had to make them through some moderator, which indeed made me blow my top, as zztop express it. And for that I'm sorry, not as much as you would like probably, but that's life, isn't it :)

What really pi**es me of is all those functions I need to allow to get this site to work. Using Noscript (Firefox) I think it should be enough with me allowing TNS. The old one didn't need any of it to work. Then again, possibly it failed in some other areas, but none that I noticed. And it was fast Chris, this is no longer a fast site.

And yes, no 'global possibility' to turn of smileys, changing the layout of all I've written before. Small things maybe but irritating just the same.

Might not be just you... thanks for taking the trouble to explore this and try to fathom it out. I will see if there is a simple reset.

If it buggers things up I can restore from the DB without losing anything as long as I do a DB dump immediately before the tweak...

Thanks for writing back. Actually, this formatting and site is, on average, a lot faster than the earlier edition, and it doesn't go through page-realignments and clunky render-blocking formatting before it displays material. So, actually, it should be a better user experience than the old one.

I wonder if it's that it takes a little while to get used to something new, and we were all well-used to the old layout?

PS - I'll see if I can put in, specially for you, a New Topic button at the screen top that will then ask for which board you want to post into... that should make it even easier.

Sorry Chris, sometimes I write a lot, and I do not ignore people, you're definitely one of the good guys in my book. But those days I'm working eleven hours or more a day, at a average, so the few times I write is when I manage, one way or another :)

This week I took of just to get some time to fix personal stuff, and that's also why I found the time to nag :)

I'm not joking about the time it takes to load a page though, and I've changed provider finding the same thing to be. You might want to blame it on my version of Firefox, but I don't expect that to be the truth.

Without Ad-Blocking, viewing TNS is much slower than other forums I use.
Some of those forums have adverts, but those Ads don't have animation or video, which uses lots of CPU & bandwidth.
Here's a TNS page in FireFox without addons, (so no adblocking), basically stuck at ~55% CPU ...

* animated adverts means high CPU.gif (306.13 kB . 800x575 - viewed 14281 times)

Constantly using ~55% CPU makes navigating the site very sluggish.
For me viewing a TNS page with adverts blocked, CPU usage is <5%, once the page has loaded.

Thanks, @RD-2 - I must admit that I've not noticed a problem on my machine (I do my testing on an ancient laptop, although I mainly use chrome), and my net connection here is not the fastest. I suppose it might reflect the kinds of ads that you are being shown... if I've not been receiving a heap of videos then I might not have experienced the slow down to which you've been subjected. I'll keep an eye on it. I'm doing tweaks all the time, so I'll make sure we prioritise keeping things as slick as possible.

PS - I've got a way to merge accounts, so I can try to transfer all of the posts and rep from RD to RD-2 for you, and then rename RD-2 to RD, in case there are some other legacies of having an old account, if you like?

It's not a browser specific problem : here's the same high-CPU on Iron browser, (aka chromium),

* High CPU in Iron browser (aka chromium) no AdBlocker.gif (619.54 kB . 643x532 - viewed 13778 times)
(The graphs are ~100 seconds wide).

Without Ad-Blocking, navigating to a different* TNS page is like playing Russian-roulette:
the adverts shown will change, they could be animated ones which use so much CPU that further navigation is like wading through treacle.

( * or reloading the same page ).

With 'NoScript' it doesn't matter if I block scripts or not, the 'delays' are still there when I go back to the 'tree' instead of reading a 'limb', I think it has to do with the server 'pushing' those adverts possibly, but I'm not sure. Or maybe it's the severs around TNS that are so persistent 'pushing'. But it's no fun on the receiving end.
=

The weird stuff is that sites like the Guardian, which have a incredible amount of 'connections' that I block, don't present me with those delays that TNS do.
