Validity of biofeedback
« on: 23/10/2004 02:20:40 »
Anyone had any experience with nuerobiofeedback?  I've been thinking of it as an alternative to the pharmaceuticals my doc wants to shove down my throat to deal with the anxiety/attention problems I've been having.  I don't know much about it other than it's a way to conscously develop the ability to assume the brainwave patterns common to meditative states...

Jay, I think that would be an awesome thing for you to try!  Would love to hear what it's like.

I'll keep ya posted.  I'm going to pick up some 5-HTP tomorrow and try that for a week or two before I drop loads of cash on what will surely not be an inexpensive treatment.  The crap going on in my head fits the pattern of low seratonin levels and 5-HTP is the direct precoursor of seratonin without going through any possible alternate pathways like tryptophan does.  I spent the better part of an hour reading a book on 5-HTP today and it's worth checking out.

Great!  I'd like to hear what (if anything) the 5-HTP does for you too.  Gonna keep you busy just keeping me up to date.[;)]

From what I hear, it's very effective, and in the long run, maybe not as expensive as your pills.  It puts you in control of your reactions.

5-HTP rocks!  I've been taking it about 5 days now, along with St John's Wort and I feel the best I have in a loooong time, even on the klonopin.  I've all but lost the weird depersonalization / surreality disconnected feeling I was having and haven't even come close to any anxiety problems.  I'll prolly hold off on the biofeedback until I decide to come off the benzos this Christmas.  (once school's out)

I thought you'd got shot of the benzodiazepines - did you restart them then ?

Yeah, I had to.  I tried quitting the benzos and quitting smoking at the same time and had a meltdown.  I figured I'd be best off waiting until my month-long break this winter between semesters to give it another go.

I'm asking for Wild Divine for Xmas this year.  I'll report back on how well it works.  I also found a listserv for a group trying to build a low-cost EEG for neurofeedback.  I've done some microcontroller programming, so I might help them out.  Paging Neilp to this thread so he can chip in  =)

Water is very bad for you, unless mixed with coffee or tea. It is a fact that we derive large amounts of anti-oxidants from Coffee and tea, but none at all from plain water.
