Looks a lot like a bottlebrush.

They grow in Australia don't they? I'm sure I saw some in my friend's garden in Perth.

Maybe some of our antipodean contributors can confirm this?

No, it doesn't mean that but you may be. It's definitely a bottle brush - I had one (in UK) and it died as they are sensitive to the cold.
