What gas is inside a bell pepper?
« on: 05/08/2008 13:00:47 »
Mo Islam  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello,

I love your show and thank you for making this available to
Humanity.

My question was posted on the Forum also. What gas or mixture of gases is inside Bell Peppers (and other types of fruits with empty spaces inside).

Thank you.

Mo Islam

What do you think?

I guess it's air, most gas exchange takes place at the leaf surface.

I'm not so sure because the cavity is sealed off to prevent infection. Even if it was "air" it would presumably be "changed air" because the tissues of the fruit will produce some gases and use others.

Any plant experts know the answer to this very interesting question?
