Why do birds take dust baths?

There are two small birds taking a "dust bath" in the dry earth under the tree outside my window.
Anyone want to tell me/speculate as to why?

It's a great way of getting rid of ticks and lice, and excess oil from preening etc....it also has a cleansing effect too.....as you've noticed....it will usually always be dry earth !!
