Do I Need To Turn Off Individually Or can I Just Turn The Surge Thingy Off ?
« on: 30/06/2009 20:30:50 »
Dear Surgeologists,

As a sheepy I of course luff music. Music is my all time favourite thing comprised of notes, pitches and tones composed and played with musical instruments !

Say I had a whole bunch of stuff like this plugged into a surge protector.

 [ Invalid Attachment ]
A bunch of plugged in stuff behaving itself yesterday.

Is it necessary to turn off each item individually or could I get away with turning just the surge protector off ?

Knowing this will help me know it.

Thanking ewe for your kind consideration.

hugs et les shmishes

mwah mwah mwah  !

Well, I went and figured that it was designed to help in the event of surges. There's no indication that it can be used as a one-4-all turnoffable switchy thing !

It depends upon what the surge protector is protecting.  If the surge protector is acting as a voltage limiter to protect your HiFi from high-voltage spikes in the supply, then no, it won't do any harm, at least not to your HiFi.  If the surge protector is protecting your supply from excessive current draw when the HiFi is first switched on though, it still shouldn't do any harm because it should still limit the current drawn through it.

It's most likely to be a voltage limiter, protecting your HiFi from spikes.

Turn it off by all means , surge protectors have a VDR  which clamps voltage spikes  as long as not too many too often when it fries. ( there is a joule rating)
( and if you get a decent one a spark gap around 750V +for lightning protection as used in every single BT phone jack plate.).

Turn on is the problem since most appliances with switchmode PSU`s take maybe 3x on start.  Some have an inrush of 8amps for a 2amp supply, I`ve been there the 3 amp fuses last about 20 on`s and blow.
you can buy a scheduled mains unit that gives a 5 or more second delay for each , and brings stuff up that way. or just switch on sensibly

That's all a bit expensive and over the top. If this great steaming heap of Hi Fi is really taking more than 13A worth of peak current for long enough to fry something then buy TWO surge protectors. If you need to turn the heating down when listening to music then your mean power consumption may be enough to produce significant peaks but I doubt that your power amp has a cooling fan in it.?

I've got a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) running my studio; this was motivated by two factors. 1) we are continuously having short power-cuts here (a second or so, but long enough to cause a computer to lose a whole interview you're in the middle of recording). 2) The gear I have is too expensive to risk some spike on the line blowing stuff.

The UPS has built-in surge protection and can be used as a master on / off. I suspect your anti-surge unit can do the same.

What sort of load and for how long is your UPS rated at? Presumesbly you don't need to supply your whole studio from it - just the vital bits.
