I'm sorry, but when something 'affects 12-17% of children' then it raises serious doubts as to whether it is anything other than a variant of normal. This is ridiculous. Record numbers of children are being diagnosed with all kinds of rubbish conditions in the US and, worse still, they are being pumped full of medications to 'cure' them.
What has not occurred to most of these people is that the developing brain is a highly plastic organ that is changed by the experiences it confronts. Altering brain neurochemistry from a young age by filling a child with drugs can therefore have significant lifelong impacts on their future mental health.
The surge in these sorts of diagnoses is a symptom of the lives we now live and the lack of time we invest in young children.

I am suprised at the high levels of children diagnosed with ADHD nowadays. Almost every kid I encounter is on Ritalin. I'm wondering whether it is a quick fix used as a substitute for not spending time with our children.

most, if not all "disorders" are personality quirks, not disorders. its not psychiatry's job to make value judgements. there is no "normal" there is just whats typical. you may have a way of thinking or in this case, sensing, which is atypical. whos to say its a disorder?
there is no right and wrong, there is only popular opinion.(hunter s. thompson)
and i agree its dangerous to mess with growing children physicly or mentally
