In the EMS, backboards are not in use in Europe which is a sharp contrast in the US. Insofar as spine immobilization, several research including those done in the US by American scientists conclude the harmful effect of those rigid backbboards.
To date, however, these devices are still in use. Why? Are those studies unconvincing to the American EMS? Do they think that backboards are really safe and if they do, on what scientific evidence?

Is this the same as a stretcher? Or, is this that curved, hard plastic, plate with straps? What would be the alternative to this? I can't see moving someone with a spinal injury without one.

Surely its important to use a hard base to place the back on so as to not move it and thus cause any spinal cord damage, what would be proposed instead of one of these to move a victim? a shopping trolley?
