It might not matter, not from some cosmic perspective. Stapeldon's book is a beautiful example of using that perspective. What finally mattered in it was life.     https://freeditorial.com/en/books/last-and-first-men

but to me it matters.

It was written 1930, after him living through the first world war, the war that introduced gassing of battle fields.

By that time the world population was around 2 billions. Depending on whom you ask it still is a sustainable population, that is, if you ask me I prefer to set the limit at one billion.

that is about one decade after the Haber Bosch process was unveiled 1914.  https://www.tfi.org/the-feed/fertilizer-history-haber-bosch-process

Now feeding around half the earths population. "  Some half a billion tons of fertiliser is produced via the Haber process every year, requiring 2% of the world’s energy to apply the heat and pressure demanded to force nitrogen pumped from the air to bond with hydrogen to form ammonia.

To acquire that hydrogen an astonishing 5% of the world’s natural gas production, methane — 2/3 of which in the U.S. is extracted by hydraulic fracturing of subterranean rock layers with pressurized fluids — is fed into chambers and mixed with steam where both compounds react to give up their hydrogen components. With it came 'industrial farming' and what I call mono plantations. It didn't happen over night but once it took form it outperformed all other types of older farming practices. Building on industrialization, new technology, artificial fertilizers and pesticides, reducing the seed variety.

" Diversified farms gave way to genetically uniform monocultures—fields planted with just one crop species at a time, such as corn, wheat, or soy, over a very large area. Meat, milk, and egg production became largely separated from crop production and involved facilities that housed a single breed of animal, during a particular period of its lifespan, for a single purpose (e.g., breeding, feeding, or slaughter). Farmers, once skilled in a breadth of trades, fell into more specialized roles. "

And " It is estimated today that 99.9 percent of the chickens for meat, 97 percent of chickens producing eggs, 99 percent of the turkeys, 95 percent of hogs and 78 percent of the cattle are all produced in industrial settings. For each animal that is produced for human consumption, there are only three to five companies which are involved and control the entire output of these animals.

In addition, the average animal has evolved from what was deemed to be “normal” years ago into super production machines themselves. For example, in the year 1950, the average cow produced around 665 gallons of milk each year. Today, they now produce somewhere on the average of 2,300 gallons per year. "

Machines.

This in its turn connect to the construction of limited companies and corporations, in where only the company will hold any liabilities.

And it can always go into liquidation, or bankruptcy.

" The word "corporation" derives from corpus, the Latin word for body, or a "body of people". By the time of Justinian (reigned 527–565), Roman law recognized a range of corporate entities under the names Universitas, corpus or collegium. These included the state itself (the Populus Romanus), municipalities, and such private associations as sponsors of a religious cult, burial clubs, political groups, and guilds of craftsmen or traders. Such bodies commonly had the right to own property and make contracts, to receive gifts and legacies, to sue and be sued, and, in general, to perform legal acts through representatives.[8] Private associations were granted designated privileges and liberties by the emperor.[9]

Entities which carried on business and were the subjects of legal rights were found in ancient Rome, and the Maurya Empire in ancient India.[10] In medieval Europe, churches became incorporated, as did local governments, such as the Pope and the City of London Corporation. The point was that the incorporation would survive longer than the lives of any particular member, existing in perpetuity. The alleged oldest commercial corporation in the world, the Stora Kopparberg mining community in Falun, Sweden, obtained a charter from King Magnus Eriksson in 1347.  "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_companies

and  " Limited liability is viewed by many eminent corporation law scholars as a defining attribute of the business corporation. Notable contemporary observers, including the Presidents of Columbia and Harvard, viewed limited liability corporation as the greatest single discovery of modern times, surpassing steam and electricity. Such statements about the historic importance of limited liability as a game-changing invention were theoretically substantiated with the emergence of economic analysts of corporation law in the 1960s and beyond.

I conceptualize this process as divided into three definable periods, linked by two critical transition phases, rather than just two periods, before and after the invention as held by the conventional wisdom. In Period I—the nascent corporate economy featuring the first joint-stock corporations in 1550–1600, until around 1800 – there was no notion of the attribute of limited liability and no actual manifestation of it as such. One should not read my argument as claiming the attribute of limited liability existed but was not yet conceptualized in this period: pre-1800 business corporations simply predated the relevance of limited liability. Corporations then were not unlimited but they were not limited either—hence, the question of limited vs. unlimited liability had not yet been formulated. What may have misled some scholars are the manifestations of the separate legal personality of the corporation. The implication of the legal personality attribute of the corporation was that the corporation was not a pass-through enterprise but a liability-bearing entity. But without debt finance, without a procedure for dissolving insolvent corporations, without the legal ability to determine whether shareholders would bear liability in insolvency, limited liability in the modern sense could not yet exist. "

It's a very simple game. It builds on inequality, generating profits without liabilities for any person involved if possible. It doesn't care how it does it, by banking, robbery or bitcoins,  the laws existing supporting it, well mostly. When it creates social havoc  as 1929 , the laws gets subtly changed but the main principle remains.

It becomes like all good ideas, corrupted.
What we have today are corporate mammoths, without borders, without liabilites and without responsibility.

And it's a process in where climate scientists, wanting you to understand, try to reformulate global warming into profits. They fail, because there are few profits involved in it for, f.ex, fossil industries.

And the game builds on trickle down, or up, depending on definitions. The least money to those furthest down on the ladder, or the most profits for those at the top of this ladder. That's how I define it anyway.

From the many to the few.
