A long time ago I called it a 'race', between our environmental disasters as topsoil, groundwater, deforestation etc, global warming, and wars.

And I wondered what would 'win'. I hoped it would be the environment and global warming as that would put the focus where it was needed, instead of wars. As it seems today we get it all, together in a holy mess.

We get a variety of genes, and personalities to it, some of us taking a lot of chances, others reluctant. All part of the genome and our survival as a species. And we don't change those factors easily.

That's where the precautionary principle steps in. You can call it a compromise between risk taking and being over cautious. It's about looking at alternatives searching for the ones maximizing survival

Historically it usually stepped in after the facts, and it didn't matter. Earth was large enough to handle our disasters, we wasn't that many and we didn't have the conveyor belt principle, modern science and 'industrial' mass productions, etc.
