If you have your mind set to eat your belt... and shoes....

I'd encourage you to go to your pet store and purchase a rawhide bone.  It will be the same thing, but without all the tanning and dyes added.

You should be able to chew on it raw, but it may not hurt to boil it for a while.  You could always grind it up in your food processor.

Thank ewe Clifford. so, it is a genuine food source then?...yummy !..I thought I'd just whack it in the pressure cooker for a couple of hours....should be tasty although I understand the tanning and dyes may make for a colourful meal !

Ordinarily I think people who worry about preservatives in food are making a mountain out of a mole-hill. I realise that some people are adversely affected by sulphites and such, but for most of us it's a non-issue.
However
I think the chrome compounds and things like chromium salts and pentachlorophenol used as preservatives in some leather would make it a really bad idea.

Which is why I suggested Rawhide.

the main reason for tanning leather is to remove all of the good nourishing stuff so that bugs don't eat it...

Notwithstanding modern preservatives, I think all you would acheive by eating it would be to stave off hunger for a time.

You know,
If you choose to try rawhide.

You might try deep frying it.

Or...
You might just try Pork Rind

I agree with BC.  Unless you did your own tanning, I'd discourage eating it.

I think years ago I tried a bit of tanning.  I think it was a salt-cured skin, and then working in some kind of organic oil.  It probably smelled a bit like veggie oil too  ;)

BC will have a better idea of what they use now to tan and dye; but dog poo (known as fines) and human wee (the golden river) used to be common ingredients.  I wouldn't eat those - and I will stay away from modern alternatives

I think I would agree with BC. All those chemicals used in the tanning process coupled with dies and the regular coatings of Cherry Blossom would very likely give you a right royal guts ache and as Mazurka said, I doubt there would be any nourishment to speak of anyway. Just a worthless filler.

Also, scoffing your belt will probably result in your trousers falling down and without your high heels, your hoofs will get a tad messy (not to mention smelly, should you inadvertently tread in packet deposited by a dog.

PS. Thanks for the invite to 'do lunch', but with the above in mind, I think I'll forgo the pleasure.

Bury it for 10 years and grow crops in the soil it fertilised.

dog poo used to be common ingredient.

I think that's because it contains an enzyme that can digest hair. It's more like an exfoliant. I wonder if that's what they put in the stuff they are always advertising on the telly?

"Oooow, look Honey. This stuff has made my naughty bits all silky smooth."

"That's because it's full of dog shιt."

but dog poo (known as fines)

Unless you like sedimental wine (accompanied by the Strings of Mantovani), you might want to ask your vintner if that's the kind of fines he's using.
