If you have your mind set to eat your belt... and shoes....I'd encourage you to go to your pet store and purchase a rawhide bone. It will be the same thing, but without all the tanning and dyes added.You should be able to chew on it raw, but it may not hurt to boil it for a while. You could always grind it up in your food processor.
I think the chrome compounds and things like chromium salts and pentachlorophenol used as preservatives in some leather would make it a really bad idea.
Ordinarily I think people who worry about preservatives in food are making a mountain out of a mole-hill. Notwithstanding modern preservatives, I think all you would acheive by eating it would be to stave off hunger for a time.
