Can I recover lost text when a browser crashes?
« on: 17/06/2017 11:13:28 »
I have just typed a long piece and get a message from google that I must recover the page!
No problem to recover the page, but the text has gone, I must set to and re type it.
I know I should type into another text program, or use Edge, but the habit dies hard...

After I type a long piece of text, I select and press ctrl-c (copy to the PC copy buffer).
Then I press Post/Submit etc.

If the internet loses the connection, I can just paste in the text again on the original page.
Sometimes I might end up with 2 copies on the internet, but it saves a lot of retyping!

It's posible to install an overt keylogger addon into an internet browser :
it will record every keystroke made when the browser is open.

There are covert keyloggers used to capture passwords / bank-details ...
https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystroke_logging#Software-based_keyloggers

So if you do install a keylogger in your browser be very careful where you get it from.

* Screengrab of copy of webpage saved to computer desktop via browser tools.png (81.62 kB . 1288x780 - viewed 11118 times)

Your browser will allow you to save a copy of the the internet page to your computer ,
which includes the text you've inputted. ( The saved internet page can be opened in your browser, see attached ).

Install the free notepad++ editor. It saves the text when closed. Even if the text hasn't been saved to a named file.

Firefox will auto save the tabs and text, though how much has been saved depends on the auto save timer, which is default set to around a second. however there are drawbacks, in that it literally stores the entire page with all rendering and scripts, thus it makes a big file, and will continuously write this file out, getting larger with time and number of tabs open. I changed it to 16 minutes so it would not be a massive resource hog, but it is still useful in recovering tabs if the browser crashes or something happens.

I also just do a copy to clipboard on long posts just in case for posts I regard as long, but often just a back operation will give a usable copy with SMF forums. Then you copy it, refresh the page ( which reloads it) and paste it in the new page image.

That's interesting, Sean. I didn't know that about Firefox.

That is why Firefox keeps on growing in memory with time, keeping that file open, you can see the massive file it generates in Process Explorer as well under windows. Process explorer is part of Windows Sysinternals, a company Microsoft bought a few years ago just for the utilities they made, which are incredibly useful in using Windows better.

So that's why Firefox becomes such a hog... I thought it was just the clapped out computer I was using that was leaking memory somewhere! I must say though that the forgiving Firefox "back" button did save me from extreme frustration on a number of occasions... Still, every pearl has its price!

Edge has got a lot better recently but the only real safe way is to type into a text editor then copy and paste into the browser.

...Or periodically use the "SAVE AS DRAFT" function here on the forum to preserve your message as you write it. Then, unless the forum dies, you can always get it back.

Edge would be a great choice for this situation.

Hello, it seems a little bit late to answer your question, but I think data loss is common in daily life. If next time you lost your files after crashed drives, you can consider a data recovery tool, I have used this way to recover my deleted files. And I think the Bitwar data recovery is good to use. While the most important thing is to remember to make a backup. ;D
