Does drinking water whilst walking backwards really cure hiccups?
« on: 08/09/2017 11:08:45 »
Terri says:

Drinking water while walking backwards strangely seems to take away hiccups, but is there any truth behind this or is it all psychological?

What do you think?

I suspect that this is more about distraction than anything else. Coordinating managing to drink water and walk backwards at the same time, which is tricky enough to do when walking forwards, takes a lot of concentration; we know that diverting attention seems to arrest bouts of hiccups, so I think this is probably what's going on.

I believe it also works if you fall over and knock yourself out!

No, but drinking water while standing on your head can help ya...

Che,cheche. To be honest, there are many different ways to cure hiccups. You mostly need to try a bunch of them before you get off your hiccuping.

Hey. A very interesting way to get rid of hiccups. It will be necessary to try. Although it looks funny. Since childhood I know several ways. One of them still has to work.
Yes, when your diaphragm starts to sway, it's time to stay calm, stay calm, collect and try one of them:
1. The reverse step. Tilt your neck to your chest and drink upside down on the wrong side of a glass of water. Wet bangs, caustic eyes and a clumsy forehead mean that you did it right.
2. Sugar, spice and all good. Some people say that there is a spoonful of sugar or rinse with sugar. Hey, some medicine that sounds delicious works for me, so I say give it a chance. While you are trying to decorate a couple of Oh Henry's for this back knee and chugging several jolt cola jars for the fact that the eyelash is stuck in your eyes.
a spoonful of sugar
3. Surprise attack. This, when you think that someone scares you, you'll scare the hiccups. Of course, pulling a paper bag behind you or clapping in your ear is not going to cut it. No, this only works when someone pushes you from the ledges of the apartment building to the right-selected protective net below. ... Again, maybe just skip this at all.
4. Deepwater diver. Fill your lungs, pull out your stomach and hold your breath for as long as possible. If everything goes according to plan, your face will turn bright red and will look cheerful to all your friends.
In general, this is an unpleasant feeling and I advise you not to lose it sooner.

I believe that hiccups can be caused by gastric acid reflux, so drinking a cup of water may well wash the acid back into your stomach and help. Additionally, simply standing up can change your posture and the angle of the oesophagus and can help. I've also heard that concentrating can help, but I'm not sure why.

some people hold the belief that a little sugar will help ease the problem. This may not be the most effective strategy, because hiccups can become agitated by eating—particularly eating too much. Sucking on a hard candy might be helpful, but eating a piece of cake or a spoonful of peanut butter could backfire.
