If you do not live in an area that provides your home with water through a city or rural water system, you no doubt have a well, which requires well water filtration systems. Where I live we drink our toilet water, Our county system of recycling water is so great that Japan sent people over to study it... Everywhere else has lesser water, perhaps, but even with our great county system, the water has to travel through old pipes before we can use it... Water, by nature is our #1 source of minerals, so I'm against things like Reverse Osmosis, because while most bottled water is cleaned that way, the bottlers reAdd the minerals which is something we can't do at home... My solution is a filter that stops Sediment and Chlorine combined with an under counter unit with a filter that stops everything else for drinking... These systems are available everywhere for just a couple hundred dollars... The expense comes in with the replacement filters, basically you should spend about $250 per year to filter the water, $30 filters, 4 times a year... But here's the beauty, not only do you get to drink clean fresh safe water, but the filter saves all your water using items in your house... Chlorine and sediment attacks the copper piping as well as the rubber "gaskets" that keep all your water appliances, faucets, toilets etc from leaking... Good water filtration save not only you, but your home as well... and maybe the costs balance...

Many people in london also drink there toilet water, it is used cleaned and discharged into the rivers, only to be picked up again, many believe this is a major source of estrogen, via the birth control pilletc that is turning men infertile.

I agree with you that we need to be careful when choosing a whole house water filter. I used some types of filters but I think there is the 30-micron carbon filter that effectively filters out and removes sand, silt, particles, debris, rust, and other sediments. There is also a filter that ais to improve the taste and smell of your water. As such, it will also target and filter out chemicals such as chlorine and hydrogen sulfide. Lastly, there is a 5-micron filter that will ensure extra protection against microscopic bacteria, viruses, and anything that’s left. I would go with a reverse osmosis water filter. They are very slow but filter a wide range of contaminants; chlorine, chloramine, bad odors/tastes, heavy metals, fluoride, chromium and more. I'm using a filter that comes with it's own storage tank, faucet and water supply connector.

You can easily test if your filter works using a digital tds meter.

Many years ago, I have visited friends in the city of Adelaide (Australia). Their town water had a distinctly muddy taste, and nearly everyone had a filter on the kitchen water supply. Our friends had a big outdoor unit (it wouldn't fit under the sink!).

They told me that every few months they have to wash it out, and it picks up a lot of dirt in that time.

Normally, in a developed country you shouldn't need to worry. If you still do you should take it up with your providers, and you need to check that well before you use it.
