Cure for covid 19?
« on: 08/02/2021 01:32:08 »
Israel doctors are claiming they may have a cure for covid 19.

Placebo trails are starting now.

I heard about this last night. From what I understand, it doesn't actually destroy the virus, so it isn't exactly a cure. What it does is prevent complications from occurring due to infection. Either way, it would be quite good if the results panned out in later trials. It pays to be wary until the studies are done, but I would hope (after so many attempts) that someone somewhere would eventually find something that works well.

I wonder how it works if it's a disinfectant or its targeting the immune system overaction.

The doctor is quite right when he says that placebo-controlled clinical trials are needed to measure efficacy.

Even water is effective at keeping average hospital stays below 5 days with SARS-COV2 infections.
- What you need to show is that  a proposed drug is more effective than water at reducing hospital stays...

How long will a clinical trial take?
- Israel is making great progress in vaccinating its entire population
- They will have a declining number of patients to test it on (and those patients may not be comparable, because the later patients will have been assisted in fighting off COVID-19 by the vaccination)
- The clinical trials may need to continue in other countries with a poorer health system, eg South Africa, US or UK.
- I don't think the surrounding Arab nations will volunteer for clinical trials of a drug developed in Israel...

Reading the small print, it seems to suppress excessive cytokine response, not cure the infection, but that's all to the good: patients recover quicker (or don't die) and probably end up with significant immunity. If the side effects are tolerable, it would be a good thing to prescribe at the onset of symptoms.

Disinfectant? You realise you are in danger of making Trump correct.:)

It would be more accurate to say that they have a potential treatment.

Yep. Talking of disinfectant, I am pretty sure hot chilli curry's are good cold symptoms. Given that it's the same chemical in police mace spray it stands a chance that it pathogens will not like it.

True. I recall having a stinking cold one wet Saturday in my youth. I just survived a morning of chemistry practicals and staggered into the local curry house, streaming and snuffling. The waiter said "we can  cure that" and produced a bhuna chicken that I can still taste 56 years later, but have never quite managed to replicate. By 2 pm I was free of symptoms.

Hey! I got there first! Give credit where it's due!

But thanks for the tip - maybe my curry needs a drop of hydroxychloroquine or drain cleaner to give it that magic kick.
