To echo my previous reaction: Throughout the epidemic, Dr Fauci has been the voice of reason.
- Trump shut down the White House office of pandemic preparedness
- And ran down the national emergency stock of PPE
- Publicly ridiculed use of PPE
- While promoting quack cures like Hydroxychloroquine and a disinfectant drip
- Fauci has had to walk a tightrope, being required on occasion to contradict his ex-boss in a press conference

Maybe now we can listen to Dr Fauci - during the Trump era, he was effectively gagged.
- He commented on one occasion that Trump's attention span was "a negative number..."

You seem to be looking for a priest, rather than a scientist.
A scientist will change their mind if the data available changes.
If you want certainty, even when the evidence shows that you are wrong, join a church or a cult.

So, you just wanted to announce to the world that you don't understand the difference between common sense (which supports two masks) and data (which doesn't exist for 2 masks because nobody has done the experiment.)

- Apparently, one benefit of the outer cloth mask is to hold an inner surgical mask closer to your face, closing up the gaps around your cheekbones.
- The cloth mask can be custom-made to fit your face, and can have straps around your head, rather than elastic ear-loops

I wont comment on the discussion.  But Trump is now the only president to have been impeached twice and acquitted twice.

I agree that a mask is not perfect protection - but it does reduce the chance of transmission by something like 60% if one person is wearing it (and better if both people are wearing one).
- And social distancing is not perfect - but passing someone with 1.5 meter separation reduces the chance of transmission by something like 80%.

...so until everyone is fully vaccinated (including protection against the newer strains), masks and social distancing will greatly reduce your chance of catching the virus.

After all, the seasonal flu shot is sometimes only 60% effective at preventing the disease...

I was watching Bret Weinstein discuss this today.

He suggested that double masking is kind rediculas, and that surely they should just make masks better. He wanted evidence and had concerns double masking might be bad for a persons health. While also noting that masks with a valve on the frount, should be double masked as the valve allows air to flow straight out from the mask.

He wanted more research on what masks in which combination for best practice and evidence that there was any benefit at all.

Just as well, since the discussion was irrelevant to the vote. Cowards to a man, very few Republican senators could face their electorate if they had voted to convict the scumbag on the basis of evidence. Which is why they insisted on an open vote rather than a secret ballot. Nothing matters more to a politician than getting re-elected, and that requires unwavering party loyalty, not talent or service.

Public ignorance of masks is not normally a problem as, in normal times, the few people who wear them know why they have been issued with a particular type.  Just in case there are any naive readers here

Paper "surgical" masks stop the wearer from spitting and sneezing on the patient. They are very good at that if you wear them properly but don't offer much protection against inhaled particles because the fit is loose. Even a single layer of cloth is better than nothing and some home-made cloth masks actually fit better than the paper ones.

Hard-fitted "builders and bikers" masks with exit valves prevent the inhalation of particles but don't interfere much with exhalation because they are designed to be worn with goggles or visors which would steam up in cold weather

If you are working in a known toxic environment you really need a full-face respirator, preferably optimised for the toxic agent. In the case of COVID where the virus is carried on aerosol water droplets, a positive-displacement HEPA filter and pump  is adequate.
