Heat resistant dark mineral wanted.

I am searching for a heat resistant dark odourless granulatable mineral. Carbon won't do for it would burn in the atmosphere. Any ideas?

How fine do you need it and how much do you need? Several types of rock and lava come to mind, but if you need a fine powder or very much, it could be a problem.

It has to absorb regular blasts from a hot laser beam. Stones or sand grain size would be good. All that comes to mind is a stone we use around railway tracks here in Australia called blue metal.

Ehhh, Titanscape, what are you actually DOING with the laser beam and why does the rock or whatever have to be odourless? I've tried to guess this for myself but I just come up with weird ideas and (maybe) off mark. So, what IS it you want to do....

You can go to a garden or landscape shop and get lava rock, or several other types of rocks that would work. If you get the softer, very porous, lava rocks (I don't know the technical name, but they'll be labeled "lava rock") you can probably crush them down to a smaller size if you want. It sounds like you don't need a large quantity, but they will sell them in good size bags.

So, what sort of laser beam? What are you up to? We really need to know, as this is our only excitement in life - finding out what other NS forum members are up to.

I think I like Titanium dioxide sand too. It is needed because the hot laser is part of a denaturing process. And it would need either go out into the sky or be absorbed by a dark mineral which is safe to be around.

If we are talking resistant volcanic rocks there are a few that come to mind... If it must be dark then volcanic glass (Obsidian) is a possibility. Unsure of what "lava rock" is classified as, if it is pummice the i wouldnt suggest it would be particularly resistant, it is however the only volcanic rock you'll easily be able to make into a powder. You could use a black volcanic sand although i'm not sure where you'd pick that up from... I'f i'd have known i could have grabbed you some off the beach while i was in Tenerife [

I thought of obsidian, but then thought that it might be too reflective, thus sending shards of laser beam all over the place. I was thinking of the black pummice that looks like a hard foam. It has matte surfaces and is relatively soft and easy to crush. I'm sure there are better substances, but I don't know what they are.
