Hello, I'm Hannah and I'm a third year high school student. We were tasked to think of ideas for an investigatory project in Research and I recently came up with one that deals with water recycling. I've read in a site that recycled water isn't supposed to smell badly, or at all (if it does have an odor, it should only be a slight smell of chlorine). But then there is a mall here in the Philippines called SM that recycles water for toilets and the restrooms ALWAYS reek of a terrible smell that couldn't possibly come from anywhere else than the toilets. Also, there was one scenario wherein a mother washed her child's genital area with the toilet water and the child acquired UTI. Could it be that they are doing something wrong with the recycling and there could possibly be a better method for it? Again, this is just an idea: I haven't thoroughly researched on the topic yet. If your country uses recycled water for toilets, do they smell bad?

I interviewed David Butler, from Exeter University, recently.

He's looking at a way to recycle some household water for applications that don't require drinking quality water, like flushing the toilet, watering plants, washing or cleaning the car.

Is that pretty much what a bio filter does.
In Arcata all our waste water is pumped to this huge pond where it has traveled through the marsh lands and ends up in this reservoir.. Quite lovely area with cool plants birds and wildlife.. but the marsh kind of acts a a filter as I understand it for all of our gray water. I will try to get more information on how it works because I know I have bothered it trying to explain as I do not know enough about it . LOL

This is our gray water bio filter if you will. I don't know what else to call it. These are pictures from the Arcata Marsh! It is lovely and worth everything to reuse all that water..
