Statins as anti-osteoporotic drugs
« on: 25/09/2003 05:53:15 »
Hi,
What are the prospects of statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) as an anti-osteoporotic drugs? Are they anti-resorptive or anabolic drugs?

Hi Jimmy, welcome.  I'll see what I can find.  Be patient.

Hi Jimmy,

Looks like statins may have antiresorptive and anabolic effects on bone.  http://www.ccjm.org/pdffiles/CRUZ402.PDF

There seems to be some confusion regarding various studies.  This is an overview.  There are some interesting links through this site.  http://www.k5thehometeam.com/Global/story.asp?S=1359994

There is also some concern that statins inhibit CoQ10 synthesis.  http://www.epic4health.com/coqandstatdr.html

Hope that helps.

And now also concern that statins may affect memory :

What are some of the long term effects say of Pravastatin...?
I have been on it for about 2 years now.. I have both osteo and Rhumotoid Arthritis so how would this react to those factors? How does it effect the bone and The memory intrigues me as I have had real trouble there since after my mini stroke.. not like long term stuff but short term.. like I get up to get something and don't get to steps and have forgotten and get confused going back and forth in my head then don't even know what I had been doing or where I was before I found myself standing up confused about ..what?????? LOl Its horrible..
