What a pain. sorry you ahve had to put up with this crap Neil.

The best we can do is to engage the email validation for registration. But as has already been pointed out, it's not that difficult for spam programmes to surmount this obstacle.

okay, new registrations must now validate via email.

We'll see what impact this has. If none, then we'll move up another gear which requires moderators to validate registrations before they can be used.

Feedback on the scale of the problem would be gratefully received.

Can you make a system which automatically checks every new profile's link list?
If the links contain words "gambling" or "poker" the profile is automatically cast into oblivion.

Most sites deal with this problem by having an obscure password which you fill in on the page before you post your details, this is in a format that bots cant read because its a picture of the letters, which look like they have been drawn roughly by someone. This eliminates the bots from the join up process, because the bots can't read it.

Since Neil reports that he's not seen any signs of trouble since we introduce email reg, then we may be okay at the moment, but if it becomes a pain again, maybe I'll introduce your solution.

The Wikipedia has an article about CAPTCHA tests which is relevant here.  And a little scary - I think we're in a Turing test arms race, and the two ways it could easily go are internet becomes unusable vs. need to use government issued ID cards to prove you exist.  Pretty grim, eh?

When I had my own registration-based site I used to include an easy, random question in the email I sent to the applicant. No answer, no registration. I didn't have that many applications, though, so I could handle it all myself.
I don't know how easy it would be to automate the process but I would have thought that a small database with, say, 100 questions & answers, would suffice. I could write it without too much trouble in an "old-fashioned" programming language so I'm sure someone Chris knows could produce something PDQ.
