Being proud of being corrupt, telling others that if they don't do the same they become idiots, doesn't make it any better. In a way it could be seen as a mechanism protecting the individual from the consequences of his actions, and so being very 'human'. If you read that book of war I linked, and genocide, you will find two types of responses to why the men did as ordered. One was that it was a mans work, even if disgusting and a 'real man' had to do what a man has to do. The ones not doing it being 'weak'. The other was admitting it being cowardly, but still not wanting to stand out of the crowd. We're not speaking about monsters here, they were ordinary police getting transferred into a situation they never would have dreamed of before the war. But it made them into that.

to use your mind is important, to be able to choose is important, to be able to say no can make all the difference for you.

That's about the individual, but what lead to that situation was bureaucracy and hierarchies in a most unholy mix of flawed logic's. and the herd with its killing instincts finding a outlet for their frustrations.

It's a bitter medicine, but either you take it or we fail. You need to start looking outside 'politics'. You need to see the game. Don't apologize about it, change it.

I personally think that the one about 'not wanting to stand outside the crowd' is rather significant, and valid even for those not mentioning it. In this particular case it meant agreeing to murder men, women and kids, and that is a extreme. But I'm sure you recognize the mechanism in your daily life. You're one of the herd after all, and that's the way it works.

So that is one place the herd mentality may take you. And don't you tell me that it's impossible. To be able to say no under that kind of pressure in a war situation is something you need to be prepared for, with only a few able to react instinctively.  And when it comes to global warming it is the same herd mentality that stops you from stating your opinion in the opposition of others.

And the same flawed reasoning as for those guys will lead. The one where a man gotta do what a man can. Or woman for that sake, it doesn't really matter. Which in this case means that you will refuse to learn, until forced.

Don't kid yourself, even if you're spared your kids won't be . Global warming do not care about you, has no interest in your core beliefs, does not listen to your excuses, and take no interest in your psychology or reasons for not changing. It doesn't give a sh* about profits and GDP.
