Follicular carcinoma

A 1948 operative resection specimen from a 58 year old woman who was admitted with laryngeal stridor which had been present for ten months. Breathlessness on exertion, and swelling of the ankles were also present. On examination she was an obese woman with a marked inspiratory stridor. There was generalized hard enlargement of the thyroid. Total thyroidectomy was performed but she died ten days later. Autopsy showed a spread of malignant disease down both sides of the trachea and a cerebral thrombosis.
