Torsion of the gallbladder

An autopsy specimen from an 87 year old lady who, although suffering from dementia was otherwise fit and well, developed severe right upper abdominal pain two days before her death. She was nauseous but did not vomit. There was no evidence of jaundice. On admission to hospital, three hours before her death, she was found to have a tender swelling under the right costal margin. She was deemed too frail to operate upon, dying soon after admission.
