Actinomycotic abscess of the liver

An autopsy specimen from a 36 year old male who, having joined the army in "A1" condition subsequently serving in Europe and the Middle East from 1941 to 1945, was demobilised "C3" without pension. In May 1947 he was operated on for acute appendicitis, but was re-admitted in August with a subphrenic abscess which redischarged in November. In December he was again admitted with breakdown and suppuration of both the appendix and subphrenic drainage scars. He had become extremely thin and weak and failed to survive resuture of the laparotomy scar in February 1948.
