A 1997 autopsy specimen from a 30 year old British male, HIV +ve for several years, admitted with mental confusion. A CT scan of the brain showed several'ring enhancing' lesions, in both the white and grey matter, typical of either lymphoma or toxoplasmosis. Although his serum toxoplasma antibodies were negative empirical therapy with antitoxoplasma chemotherapy was started. Despite this the patient deteriorated rapidly and died.
