Embolus to the superior mesenteric artery

An autopsy specimen from an 86 year old woman who developed abdominal pains during the night, these continued during the following day when vomiting started. This grew worse, becoming faeculent. No doctor was called until late on the second night. She was admitted moribund, dying five hours later - some 48 hours after symptoms started.
