An autopsy specimen from a 73 year old woman, who was found dead, partly dressed, by the side of her bed. Post mortem examination revealed that she had died of a cerebral haemorrhage resulting from cerebral atheroma. Advanced atheromatous changes were found throughout the entire vascular system. Two sections of the same aorta are mounted together, on the left from the ascending aorta, on the right from the mid-abdominal region. They both show advanced atheroma with calcified plaque formation, necrosis and ulceration. Dilation has started to develop in the thoracic section shown on the left, where weakening has become advanced with early dissection.
