Tobacco might kill millions every year, but it may also be able to save hundreds of millions. Researchers from Max Planck Institute in Germany developed a genetically engineered tobacco plant which can produce an effective anti-malaria drug, known as artemisinin. But low cost artemisinin based drugs are in short supply because of the high cost of creating the drug. Dr Paulina Fuentes spoke with Lucka Bibic about her mission to investigate how tobacco plants may light up the way to beat malaria.
